Live Fearless | Book Review

My colored page
I finally got in to review a coloring book! The whimsical drawings are fun and cute, the lines fairly clear and easy to follow. The format of it is interesting too–one side a picture, the other side a prayer journal section.

As I colored a picture, I noticed that some of the lines overlaid others. For example, you would see a stem then on top of it you would see a flower–with both lines crossing.

I also didn’t care that the Scripture quotations were in various versions.

*I received this book in exchange of my honest review from Bethany House Publishing*

ABOUT THE BOOK
Embrace God’s Comforting Presence While You De-stress, Meditate, and Create!
Life can be overwhelming as we go from one urgent demand on our time to another; it’s important to slow down and remind ourselves who we are and who God is. Coloring is a wonderful way to relax and focus our minds, giving us the refreshment and freedom to be all we were meant to be. But this book gives you more than a chance to color–it also focuses your attention on the peace that God brings through his presence in your life.
This beautiful, intricately designed coloring book highlights verses from the Bible that focus on the courage that comes with knowing God is by your side. He wants us to live bold lives, free of fear, and his Word gives us the peace and reassurance to do so. Presenting this uplifting message in a fun and creative format, “Live Fearless” encourages you to drink deeply from Scripture as you color and create. Space is included for reflections, prayers, or even doodles.
You can even share your art–and God’s comforting presence–with others by posting photos on social media or by cutting out the pages to keep for yourself. Gather your favorite coloring supplies and start creating!

The Bachelor Girl’s Guide to Murder | Book Review and Giveaway

McMillanAbout the Book
In 1910 Toronto, while other bachelor girls perfect their domestic skills and find husbands, two friends perfect their sleuthing skills and find a murderer.

Inspired by their fascination with all things Sherlock Holmes, best friends and flatmates Merinda and Jem launch a consulting detective business. The deaths of young Irish women lead Merinda and Jem deeper into the mire of the city’s underbelly, where the high hopes of those dreaming to make a new life in Canada are met with prejudice and squalor.

While searching for answers, donning disguises, and sneaking around where no proper ladies would ever go, they pair with Jasper Forth, a police constable, and Ray DeLuca, a reporter in whom Jem takes a more than professional interest. Merinda could well be Toronto’s premiere consulting detective, and Jem may just find a way to put her bachelor girlhood behind her forever–if they can stay alive long enough to do so.

My Review

Whether or not Jem is in, she’s in with Merinda and her detective scheme. Though Jem’s last name is Watts, she doesn’t at all think she compares to Wattson–even though Merinda is determined to be a Sherlock Holmes and refuses to let two mysterious murders go unnoticed in political unrest.

Seriously, who would NOT laugh at the title of this book? It just entices you to the humorous account of two bachelor girls as they get into the detective world. This story had me laughing aloud–and that doesn’t usually happen when I read. Yes, there was romance in this book but it was hysterically funny. Going into detail would give spoilers.

I’m not usually a murder mystery reader, but besides the first chapter in which they trailed alongside Jasper Forth–without permission–and saw the first girl’s demise, I pretty much forgot that was the “theme” of the book. It did not at all take on a dark setting.

The girls call one of the men a name which is probably not fit to be repeated (in my vocabulary) but other than that, I suppose one would call it clean. If someone cursed, it was mentioned, “He cursed under his breath” and the author did not fill the reader in with which words he said–which I appreciated it.

Two things knock a star off for me:

It is yet another book that seems to have only “partial Christianity” in it. The one mystery that Merinda doesn’t care to solve is that of religion. Jem acknowledges God, goes to the church in the end. It mentions Ray meeting weekly with a pastor, but a real relationship with Christ isn’t threaded throughout the story.

Secondly, Jem and Merinda really are independent, feministic women. It is tastefully covered in wit, but Jem’s parents disowning her for the way she has chosen to live and Merinda’s whole outlook in life just doesn’t match what I perceive as Biblical womanhood.

A favorite quote:

“Can’t you just see the headlines? ‘Herringford and Watts stomp out the Morality Squad.'”

Jem threw up her hands. “‘Herringford and Watts get thrown in jail!'”

“‘Herringford and Watts become Toronto’s premiere investigators!'”

“Herrington and Watts better get fed soon or Watts won’t be long for their new enterprise.”

The Solid Rock | Blog Tour

TSR Release Banner FB and Blog

I am excited to be part of this blog tour for a new Christian Western! Faith Blum joins us today to talk about her new release, The Solid Rock. It is about a talented detective with a mission to find his kidnapped colleague who finds himself working undercover with a heinous outlaw who has more plans than first meet the eye. I had the chance to read this book as a beta reader, and it sure is exciting!

About the Book

3D The Solid RockJoshua woke with a quiet groan. As his senses woke up one at a time, he cracked his eyelids open. Sure enough, there was a silhouetted form standing at the foot of the bed. From the smell, the person was either from the brothel down the street or had recently left one. He forced himself to breathe evenly and reached for the knife in his thigh holster. With as tough and evil a voice as he could imitate, he spoke, “State your intentions.” Pinkerton detective, Joshua Brookings, is sent on a job that seems simple on the surface. His fellow detective has been kidnapped and his boss, William Pinkerton senses foul play. Joshua is sent to investigate Edward’s case in hopes of finding the kidnapped detective and helping solve the case that has taken over ten years to investigate. Arriving in Cheyenne, Joshua finds much more than a simple kidnapping. Yet again, he must go undercover, something he made his boss promise never to make him do again. The only Christian in the outlaw group, Joshua falters and almost loses faith in God’s providence. Will he stand on the solid Rock or drown in the sinking sand?

Excerpt

Quotable #5
Elizabeth nodded. “The notes are on the desk. I’ll be around the house most of the day. Let me know if you need anything.”
Joshua turned to her. “Before you go, can you tell me what you know?”
Elizabeth leaned against the doorway and crossed her arms. “Father was hired by a man named Allen Reese who had informally investigated some strange outlaw activities. He has paid Father for the last ten, almost eleven, years to slowly investigate whatever is going on. Recently, Father has been preoccupied and distracted unless he’s working on the case. About a week before his kidnapping, he warned me something might happen. He knows some of the people involved, but doesn’t have hard evidence and he wants to catch them all. He also doesn’t know exactly what they are planning. He did leave a list of people we can trust if it comes to that.”
“You said the house was ransacked. Was there anything missing?”
Elizabeth shook her head. “Not that I could tell. They broke a few things and they didn’t touch my room.”
Joshua sat in the chair behind the desk. “So they were only after your father.”
“As far as I know. Father said they would probably kidnap him so he couldn’t get any closer.”
“Which means their plans for this crime must be almost finalized.” Joshua stared at the desk for a minute. “Thank you, Elizabeth. I’ll try not to bother you for a while.”
Elizabeth smiled. “Thank you for helping.”
“My pleasure. I love mysteries.” As long as they don’t involve lying or going undercover.

Shapes and Swirls | Graphics Design

Last week, I pushed all of my fonts on you. This week, I’m going to introduce something that I have SO MUCH FUN with! Some are under the category of “Dingbat,” others are just swirls and designs. All of them plug into your fonts on your computer.

Some of the dingbats/swirls I have on my computer and use often are Kfon, Nymphette, WW Floral Corner.

For example, here is the banner I created for Orphan Journeys:

You can see it on the top of Journey to Love.

Compare the new Orphan Journeys series banner to my former thought (which was…no banner).

How did I create the new and improved? Let me introduce you to my favorite “font,” Nymphette. I probably overuse it, I like it so much!

First, I kept “Orphan Journeys” in the font Cinzel. Then, using good ol’ font Times New Romans I placed a line on top and on bottom of my text (yeah, I could have just drawn a line, but this is just how I do things the hard way).

THEN, the fun part! I used Nymphette letters KL (capital, yes) to create the double swirl. Then, I copied those, flipped them horizontally, and here ya go.

It is simple, but adds so much! Here are a couple of other designs in which I’ve used Nymphette to embellish:

What do you use to embellish your work?

Do you have a link to something you’ve designed? Share it in a comment–I’d love to stop by and see it!

The Sound of Silver | Book Release

Here we are again with a new release! The Sound of Silver is the sequel to The Sound of Diamonds, by Rachelle ReaI have read both in the past month–you can see my review of Diamonds here. But today we’re focusing on Silver… I have to say, I love the covers for the Steadfast Love series! They rank pretty close to the top of my favorite book covers out there!

BACK COVER
The stalwart saint and the redeemed rebel. One is fighting for faith, the other for honor…

After Dirk rescues Gwyneth from the Iconoclastic Fury, she discovers that faith is sometimes fragile—and hope is not as easy as it may seem. Gwyneth continues her quest to learn more about the love of God preached by Protestants she once distrusted.

Meanwhile, Dirk’s quest is to prevent his sullied name from staining hers. Will his choice to protect her prove the undoing of her first faltering steps toward a Father God? Once separated, will Dirk and Gwyneth’s searching hearts ever sing the same song?

MY REVIEW
Thankfully, “Silver” began right where “Diamonds” left off. Though not as much excitement was induced as “Diamonds” (not as much action). I felt a little more emphasis on romance (again, kisses, hugs, feelings, but nothing more) than I cared for but there was still a very strong message. Of surrender. Of trust. Of truth.

Rohesia’s wisdom was beautiful. I loved her conversation with Gwyn.

I did NOT like the ending!! 😉 Book three has some very important things to resolve (and better come quickly! :)).

*I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

QUOTES

“Faith cannot be bartered or shoved or forced.”

“I was waiting for what I thought was the better thing. And God gave me what was truly best.”

What good did it do to have figuratively sat at the feet of scholars when I knew little about sitting at the feet of the Lord as Rohesia said Jesus’ followers had literally done?

I tilted my head back, reminding myself he was my friend, and friends do not break friends’ noses.

Her smile deepened yet again. “What else are mothers for?” Touching her shoulder, I said, “Praying.”
