Shapes and Swirls | Graphics Design

Last week, I pushed all of my fonts on you. This week, I’m going to introduce something that I have SO MUCH FUN with! Some are under the category of “Dingbat,” others are just swirls and designs. All of them plug into your fonts on your computer.

Some of the dingbats/swirls I have on my computer and use often are Kfon, Nymphette, WW Floral Corner.

For example, here is the banner I created for Orphan Journeys:

You can see it on the top of Journey to Love.

Compare the new Orphan Journeys series banner to my former thought (which was…no banner).

How did I create the new and improved? Let me introduce you to my favorite “font,” Nymphette. I probably overuse it, I like it so much!

First, I kept “Orphan Journeys” in the font Cinzel. Then, using good ol’ font Times New Romans I placed a line on top and on bottom of my text (yeah, I could have just drawn a line, but this is just how I do things the hard way).

THEN, the fun part! I used Nymphette letters KL (capital, yes) to create the double swirl. Then, I copied those, flipped them horizontally, and here ya go.

It is simple, but adds so much! Here are a couple of other designs in which I’ve used Nymphette to embellish:

What do you use to embellish your work?

Do you have a link to something you’ve designed? Share it in a comment–I’d love to stop by and see it!

Font Craze! | Graphics Design

Part of the fun of graphics designing is playing around with different fonts. Your computer will not have the explosion of fonts that you need to be creative. It just won’t. And Times New Romans won’t get you much of anywhere.

Here is a list of the fonts that I have on my computer. And honestly, it’s a really small list for a graphics designer. I’m getting there slowly.
A couple of things you want to watch for before cramming your computer with thousands of fonts. If you’re designing things to sell, you need to be sure that you’re getting commercial free fonts. This is why I have a list–so that when I need a font, I can look to make sure I’m using a free font (and not just grabbing one from my computer which may be intended for personal use only). Secondly, beware of where you’re downloading them. You can get viruses on your computer by downloading anything from just anywhere online. I use fontspace.com. I’m not saying that you can’t get viruses from them, but so far, I’ve not had a problem.

Here’s a list of the fonts you see above if you want to copy and paste in the search option.

Scripture Memory Osmosis

I am guilty of wishing that Scripture memory came through osmosis. You know, just go to church and keep up with daily Bible reading, and the Scripture will be there, perfectly memorized for whenever it’s needed.
Wrong.
Scripture memory takes work. Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.” If I am to hide something, does that mean I’m just going to toss it somewhere haphazardly? Nope. If I’m really intent on hiding something, I’m going to spend time and do it correctly. Hiding God’s Word in my heart will take action, time, and determination on my part.

I’ll admit, this past year, my memory efforts have faltered. It’s not that I didn’t know how to memorize God’s Word. I just didn’t do it. I let busyness and other “priorities” take precedence over God’s Word. This year, though, I am determined to work on my Scripture memory on a regular basis again, with God’s help.
There are three steps that I have found to be the foundation in my Scripture memory:
1) Pray
This is a step not to be forgotten. My memory is not very good (you can ask my family, friends, and music students). And sometimes, I come to a verse that just throws me for a loop. So, I have found that the first, most important part, is to pray. Pray that God will give me the desire to memorize His Word, pray that He will help me to memorize His Word.
2) Work
As I already mentioned, memory takes work. I can’t just read through a verse five times and have it memorized (if you can, good for you! I’m slightly jealous of you…). I have to choose to put aside 10 minutes to memorize. I have to choose to prop my phone up on the windowsill to work on memory while I’m washing dishes. I have to choose to work on it.
3) Review
Once I memorize Scripture, I can easily forget it the next week (like I said, my memory’s not the best). So, I have my Scripture review cards on which I write the references for all of my memory verses. Every day, I work through one of these cards and it has helped tremendously. I can still quote verses that I first memorized five years ago.
Next week, Lord willing, I’ll share some ways that I vary up the process of Scripture memory.
Here is the verse I’m working on this week. What verse are you memorizing?

Why I Don’t Write Thank-You Notes

Before you gasp in horror, I do write thank you notes. However, as I was jotting down over a dozen notes last night, I was reflecting on the reasons I do and do not write them.
I do NOT write thank you notes…
– to flatter the giver
“Oh my goodness! You are too sweet! There is no one as kind as you! How did you know to get the perfect gift? You’re amazing!” — so, nothing is wrong with these terms, but the reason I write thank-you notes is not to showcase some flattery.
– to put the giver’s mind at ease that their gift was accepted
“I love, love, love, looooooooooove the gift you gave me!” Again, this could be true, but the main reason for writing thank-you notes shouldn’t be so that the giver knows we accepted their gift or make them feel that what they did put them in good standing with us.
– to make the giver feel good about themselves
This kind of goes hand-in-hand with the flattery. As I will put later, I like to write thank-you notes to encourage others, not just give them a pat on their back.
– because I have to
Yes, we sometimes get those gifts that make us force a smile (no, I didn’t get any of those gifts this year). And those “I’m-not-gonna-say-it’s-horrible” gifts need to be appreciated somehow. As I will expound on later, it’s not always the gift I’m thankful for, but the giver and their thoughtfulness.
– so that I can earn “brownie points” with that person and hopefully get more gifts in the future
Never, ever let this be our motivation for writing thank-you notes! If it is, then perhaps you need to do a little heart-check.

I DO write thank you notes…
– because I truly appreciate the giver and the gift
Honestly, I don’t deserve any gifts. So anything that I get is indeed above and beyond what I should get. Added to that, I’ve got some pretty amazing friends and family who have showered me with wonderfully thoughtful gifts. I can truthfully say that I do appreciate the gifts I’ve received this past season, and above that, I appreciate the relationship that these gifts signify with me and the giver.
– it gives me an opportunity to express my gratitude towards the person
I tend to write very untypical thank-you notes in that I use this time to tell the recipient how much I appreciate them and not just the gift they gave. After all, their gift is usually a reflection of their thoughtfulness.
– it gives me an opportunity to encourage the gift-giver
Let’s face it: there is something encouraging about getting a thank-you note. No, we shouldn’t give expecting gratitude, but some people do need a little encouragement. For example, my six-year-old sister was very excited that she found M&Ms for my Christmas gift because she knows it’s my favorite candy. Giving her a little thank-you note encourages her to continue giving thoughtful gifts–like Paul said in Philippians 4, not so that I can benefit from it, but that shecan get the blessing from giving (“Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.” Philippians 4:17). Often, we write thank you notes to “older people” who understand our gratitude. But why not the little ones who are just learning the blessings of giving? Let’s use this time to encourage the heart of giving!
Have you written thank you notes this year yet?
What are some reasons you do not or do write them?

Here are some thank-you cards that I designed specifically for my need last night. And, since I designed them, why not make them available to others? Now at TruthPics on Etsy.
