Pictures from December

Here are some random pictures from December that I recently got around to editing.
Taken with a Nikon D90 (no, I don’t own a Nikon, but my pastor’s wife lent me hers to help her learn how to use it):

Tree roots:

And old, dilapidated barn down our road:

And . . . pictures of people! (Sidenote: remind me not to take pictures of people in full sun again as it creates horrible “hot-spots” and harsh shadows on their faces :))

Walking down the road with friends:

And more pictures with my family and friends:

What have you taken pictures of recently?

A Couple of Random Pictures . . .

I didn’t have much time to play with new photoshoots last week (and if you noticed, didn’t post on Friday due to being away from my computer), but here are a couple of pictures that I took in the beginning of December that I just got around to editing. With these pictures, I played around with cropping – because sometimes a fun crop makes the picture pop.
For example, the picture of us friends . . .
This was taken with a wide-angle lens so you see the whole angle of sky and ground. And it gives it a neat look as a 4×6. However, crop it as a 4×3 and you see:
Your eyes are instantly drawn to the people and not the surroundings (after all, if I wanted a picture of the ground, field, and sky, I could have easily done so without the people). I personally like this crop better (or perhaps I have just “discovered” my new favorite crop and like it in many different pictures :)).
And the picture of my sisters (credit my friend Julia for the cute pose idea – I just sneaked beside her and snapped my own picture ;)) . . .
When cropped to a square, you again are less distracted by the excess of trees and ground.

Have you played around with cropping recently? What has been your favorite experiment?
And for those of you who have been bugging me about more photoshoots, I took another sister out on a photoshoot this afternoon. Come back Friday to see who my newest captive was. 😉

R&R | Photoshoot

For New Year’s Eve we visited some friends on our way to my uncle’s house. While there, I was swept away to do a small photoshoot of the two Rebeccas, aka as 1.0 and 2.0 (yes, we do call them that to keep them straight :)). I almost consider this more of a snap-shot session than a real photoshoot (which we hope to do in the future, Lord willing), but here are the pictures!

Annnd . . . a few inside pics. Low light, no flash, high ISO, grainy pictures . . . enjoy them for the composition, not the quality. 🙂

Elizabeth | Photoshoot

Sunday, my sister and I had about an hour to shoot some pictures together. It was about 4:00 when we started so the lighting was not ideal, but I enjoyed the challenge. Plus, I had fun – what a blessing it is to have family as best friends!
My Picks
As I was editing through the pictures, several really stood out to me which I just love! Here they are and a little bit of why I love them.
Black and white is not always my favorite. It just has to be that perfect picture to “pop” – this is probably my absolute favorite B&W that I have personally done.
Love the warm tones:
And then there is my favorite location: the new chicken coop. 🙂

(And in case it sounds funny that I’m all about the “style” of the photo and not the subject, yeah, I do like the subject too ;))
For Your Enjoyment
And there were many more pictures that we liked. Some of them I did not particularly care for how the lighting turned out (considering we had to dodge sun spots) but it was a good learning experience for me.

Experiments
There is this soft glow look that is really popular. It isn’t my favorite for everything, but I did want to catch a little sun-glare. It does give a nice “dreamy” feel but I was sad when I discovered that I made one of the most common photography mistakes: it looks like she is “eating” the plant (note to self: remember to check for trees growing out of heads, elbows being cut off, etc., etc., etc.).

Next time, I’ll share about the little “photobomb” we had. 🙂

Make a Joyful Noise (Behind-the-Scenes)

Psalm 100 is evidently one of my favorite passages in God’s Word that speaks of music. Today, I took the first verse and added it to a violin picture that I took.

I played around with some layering and thought I’d give you a little behind-the-scenes.
(Disclaimer: I don’t claim to be a layer master so if you know of something I did wrong, don’t hesitate to show me a simpler way)

Program: Photoshop Elements 10

First Layer: Violin
Of course, I began with the violin! 🙂 I lightly edited the image in Photoshop Elements 3, particularly upping the contrast. So, here is the almost-original image:

Second Layer: Blue
Next, I created a blue fill layer (color: 5c687a).
{Layer > New Fill Layer > Mode: Color Burn > Color 5c687a}

I set the opacity for this layer to 50%. This is what it did to the violin image:

Layer 03: Grass
I selected another image I had taken of simple weeds.

For this layer I selected opacity 15% just to give it that hint of texture. Not much.
Layer 04: Green Difference Clouds
Then I created a new layer with difference clouds.
{Layer > New Fill Layer > Color: 858142 – with that layer: Filter > Render > Difference Clouds}
This is what I got:

Again, I chose the opacity to be 15% (if you can’t tell by now, I like just the tiniest hints of change)
Layer 05: Another Violin
This is probably not how you’re supposed to work Photoshop layers, but I decided that the image was a little darker than what I wanted so instead of working out the mathematics to lighten each layer, I just overlaid another violin picture: opacity 40%.
Layer 05: Text
The final step was adding the text. I used two fonts: Cardif (for the plain text) and Allura (for the fancy text). I played around with text styles (glow, simple sharp inner bevel, drop shadow) until I came up with the look I liked (yes, I could go more into detail, but it would seriously confuse you).
If you own Photoshop and haven’t played around with layers yet, I encourage you to give it a try! Don’t be scared to just click buttons (just observe what buttons you click so if you come up with something fantastic, you’ll know how to replicate it).

My Photoshoot With Julia

Yesterday, I shared the photoshoot I took with Julia as the subject. Today are the pictures that Julia took of me (shared with her permission). This was also great fun and I had a blast. I have wanted pictures with long, wavy grass for as long as I can remember. It wasn’t until this week that I realize that our neighbor’s property (which he kindly allows us to tramp in) has just what I envisioned!
Julia, thanks for giving me my first “solo” photoshoot! You’re doing a great job in photography! Keep it up!

And a couple of pictures with my sister, Rachel, on the recorder.

Julia | Photoshoot

Impromptu photo-shoots are great fun! This week, we had some friends over, one of which is a co-photographer (she uses Nikon, but we won’t hold that against her ;)). After looking at some photography websites together, I was ready to get my hands on the camera! Julia was gracious to be my subject and we brought her ukelele along for a walk.
Some of the images will appear small to fit on the blog, so click on the first one to view the pictures larger.

I had so much fun taking pictures with you, Julia!

Stay tuned tomorrow and I’ll share the photoshoot swap: Julia did a photoshoot of me.

Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:” (1 Timothy 1:5)

Announcing . . .

Yes, I’m at it again! Last week, the Lord allowed me to open With a Joyful Noise.

This week . . .

it is Truth Pics! Unlike With a Joyful Noise, Truth Pics is merely my “hobby-business.” In fact, you’ve seen all of the pictures already, most of which I’ve shared on Fridays. However, you can still hop on over where I now have large quality images for sale as instant digital downloads. And if you have an Etsy shop, I’d love to hear about it!

Maggie’s Hopechest (cover design)

It was Maggie’s teenage dream to acquire her very own hopechest. Surely now that the Lord provided one for her, He wouldn’t ask her to give up the collection she’s worked on for years – or would He?

“Maggie’s Hopechest” is a short story that the Lord allowed me to write recently. It’s an old idea that I’ve had for several years, but never made the time to sit down and write it. Short stories are an excellent way to express story ideas when you don’t have time to sit down and write a full-length novel. I’m not a short-story writer by any means (aka: I’m very wordy) but this was a great challenge for me to stay concise and keep the plot flowing.
But! I haven’t edited the short story yet, so for now, here’s the cover I was playing with:
Original
After looking at it, I realized that it looks very vintage and masculine. Neither are a good portrayal of the short story (it is a modern story about a girl), so I played with some color, trying to “soften” the tones.
Purple

Pink

As I looked at it, I began to wonder if the chest was what gave it that look, so I tried to lower the opacity on the chest:

Pink 02

And, as I always like “behind-the-scenes” stuff, here is the base image that I used. I actually created this image as a background for my sister’s blog, using a picture of burlap (with writing) and a few Photoshop Elements features.
And then, since I didn’t have any picture of a hopechest or trunk on hand, I searched for a royalty free image and found one:
Via freerangestock.com (use caution when looking!)

If you would be so kind as to give your opinion and/or advice concerning my “cover play,” here are some questions I’m wondering:

– Does the cover look too masculine?
– Which cover gives the thought of a girl with her treasured possessions?
– Any overall suggestions?

And a random question on the topic:
– Do you have a hopechest? (no, I do not :))

Project: Par la Grace

Last weekend, I did a photoshoot with . . . wood! Yes, you read that correctly. My oldest sister has begun making wooden signs and is working towards getting a shop set up online to sell them. For now, you can visit her business FaceBook page: Par la Grace Shoppe

Also in getting her website set up (not yet live), I’ve played around with a few banners, buttons, and such. Jessica isn’t sure that she likes all of the swirls, so these may change in the future. But for now:

(Etsy shop to be opened soon)

Have you been working on any new projects?
And (for any chance to brag on my sister’s work ;)), which sign is your favorite?
