Word Wednesday #104

What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?
Job 21:15
Such are the thoughts of the wicked (see Job 21:7, 14)–yet, if we’re not careful, our lifestyle as believers can scream these questions. When we choose our own path and walk however pleases us–what is God that we should serve Him? When we neglect prayer or doubt that prayer is beneficial–what profit do we have, praying to Him? Oh, believe, our lives should be one of seeking God and serving Him, being faithful to communicate with Him daily!

Word Wednesday #103

Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
Job 1:20-21
When we find ourselves facing small trials (compared to Job’s), we whine instead of worship and blame God instead of blessing Him. Job had his perspective right: we deserve nothing and absolutely any good we have is from God; and God doesn’t need our permission to leave or take. We usually have an elevated image of self, thinking we deserve better or God owes us. Not so with Job. He was a picture of humble faithfulness.

Word Wednesday #102

And there remained among the children of Israel seven tribes, which had not yet received their inheritance. And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, How long are ye slack to go to possess the land, which the LORD God of your fathers hath given you?
Joshua 18:2-3
There are times in our spiritual life that we are like the Israelites here. God has promised us peace, victory, strength, and so much more. Yet we do not have it because we do not move forward to claim what was promised to us.

Word Wednesday #101

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Joshua 1:8

We like the thought of spiritual prosperity and success, but this promise is linked to our actions: staying in God’s Word, meditating (thinking) on it, and observing (applying).
Spiritual growth relies on these three steps: reading our Bible, pondering it, applying it.

Word Wednesday #100

Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour.
Numbers 24:11
Obeying God may cost us earthly promotion, but nothing can compare to the spiritual peace and blessing that comes from steadfast obedience.

Word Wednesday #99

And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD’S hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.
Numbers 11:23
The Lord’s hand is not slack–but it must be according to His promises. We must be careful to not guarantee that God will do something that He has not promised in His Word. He is able to do the impossible, but that is according to His promises–not ours.

Word Wednesday #98

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
Romans 8:12-13
It’s easy to read verse 12 and say, “Now I don’t need to live after the flesh” then by the flesh try to accomplish it. The key is in verse 13: we must conquer the flesh through the Spirit.

Word Wednesday #97

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Acts 17:11
They listened with a ready mind and compared the message they heard to God’s Word. Today, we have many people who listen–yes, with a ready mind–but they fail to compare the message with Scripture. For this reason, false doctrine reigns in the multitudes of Americans. Am I studying God’s Word for myself?

Word Wednesday #96

And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
Acts 4:29
They did not pray for their fears to be calmed, the trial to ease, the persecutors to disappear–they prayed for boldness to obey. What would happen in my life if, instead of praying for my comfort, I simply prayed for boldness to obey–no matter the circumstances?
God granted their request and gave them great power and great grace, “And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.” Acts 4:33

Word Wednesday #95

And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river…Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh.
Genesis 41:1, 14
Those two silent years. In them, Joseph stayed faithful to God–while waiting, never knowing if he would be released from prison. Am I faithful to God while waiting? Am I faithful despite my circumstances?
