Word Wednesday #74

8 Behold, I go forward, but He is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive Him:
9 On the left hand, where He doth work, but I cannot behold Him: He hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see Him:
10 But He knoweth the way that I take: when He hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
(Job 23:8-10)

So often, we want to see God at work, feel Him working. But we don’t have to see evidence of God to know that He is there, working in our hearts and lives, according to the promises in His Word. As the next verses indicate, we must continue in God’s way and commandments even if we “feel” no change.

11 My foot hath held His steps, His way have I kept, and not declined.
12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of His lips; I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.
(Job 23:11-12

“He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and He hath set darkness in my paths.” Job 19:8

How often does this seem to be my way–dusky, unclear? And yet, as we look at Job’s life, it was but for a season. Though my way may seem dark now, I must not be discouraged but continue seeking the Lord until He sheds light on my path.

“And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.” Luke 5:5
Two different thoughts with this verse:
– Am I willing to turn back and “keep doing” what the Lord leads me to do, even if I have previously seen no results? Am I willing to obey simply “at His Word?”
– That night the men had toiled uselessly in their own strength. But, upon later receiving the commandment from Jesus, they gleaned the fruits of  going in His timing and His power.

Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; Luke 3:5

Christ is greater than the lifestyles of men to where He can straighten no matter how crooked it was and He can smooth out, no matter how rough it was.

Let’s see how this works…

For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. Mark 7:3
What rules am I allowing to dominate my life? rules that are not spelled out in Scripture, but I apply them for “personal holiness?”

But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. (Mark 14:16-17)

The disciples saw what they had physically, without the power of Jesus. What is it Jesus is asking me to do, but I am relying on what I can physically see, not on Jesus’ limitless power?

Word Wednesday #68

“But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.” (Jeremiah 44:18)

Not only were the people in great delusion, it seemed that their motive to turning away from idols was rooted in “What can I get from this?” and when God justly did not grant their desires, they blamed Him. What is my motive for serving the Lord? My love for Him or my love for the benefits? Would I serve God even if I saw no blessings come my way?

Word Wednesday #67

“Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spake to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountains of the house as the high places of a forest. Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death? did he not fear the Lord, and besought the Lord, and the Lord repented him of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus might we procure great evil against our souls.” (Jeremiah 26:18-19)

Hezekiah was unknowingly an example for good to those after him. The choices I make today are affecting and influencing others–even generations after me. Is my life an example for good and following God or self-centered, following the whims of my flesh?

Word Wednesday #66

“But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.” Isaiah 43:1
Spoken to Israel, this is a truth every person must embrace by faith. Do you believe that there is only one God? that there is no Savior but the Lord Jesus Christ?

“I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.” (Isaiah 43:25)

“Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.” (Isaiah 44:8)

“I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the Lord, and there is none else.” (Isaiah 45:5-6)

“Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the Lord? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” (Isaiah 45:21-22)

Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,” (Isaiah 46:9)

Word Wednesday #65

“And her merchandise and her hire shall be holiness to the Lord: it shall not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise shall be for them that dwell before the Lord, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing.” Isaiah 23:18

Though I know this was a prophecy, it did evoke thoughts that seemed to apply to me:
Can our treasure be holiness to the Lord when we lay it up and do not use it? This thought seems to go beyond mere money, though that is definitely applicable. But what about hoarding our time…our testimony…our talents? Keeping it to ourselves, we will miss the blessing that we may get when we give it to the Lord to use.

“Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us.” Isaiah 26:12

How vital to keep the latter part of the verse before us: it is God Who has wrought all our works in us. Any goodness, righteousness, talent, etc. is entirely God’s Work in our lives.
